Internet Awareness Print

On Friday the 7th of May we had a guest speaker Sergeant Jo Lomas come and speak to us about the dangers on the internet and the ways we can prevent them from happening. The evening started with a HDTV link up with Dinner plain and Gnurad with Jo introducing herself and telling us a little bit about what she does and why she is here.

Jo works at Bairnsdale in the Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Unit. She talked to us about how easy it is for someone to track you down off the internet with only one little bit of information. It made everyone think about how little information they should be putting on the internet and I’m sure most of the kids will be changing their profile and editing their friends on Facebook and MySpace. The next thing Sergeant Jo shared with us was a short show about paedophiles that was on 60 minutes. I think it shocked everybody because as I glanced around the common room everyone’s hands where over their mouths. Next we all were asked a few questions about the topic and then we all had a chance to ask our own questions. I was surprised to see so many questions being asked, not just by Snowy but Gnurad and Dinner Plain as well.  The night ended with our brains filled to the top with information and even more questions. I think everyone enjoyed the experience and Jo got a few people keen on working in that unit when they’re older, which was good to see. Thank you Jo for giving us the opportunity to learn about all of this, without you we may have not been aware of the dangers.
